Drivers Protest Against Cab and Auto Aggregators in Bhubaneshwar, Back Government’s Odisha Yatri for Fair Pricing
Bhubaneswar, December 2024: In a major demonstration across Bhubaneswar, hundreds of auto and cab drivers halted their services to protest against high commissions and alleged exploitative practices by ride-hailing platforms. The drivers voiced their frustration over unfair pricing policies that they claim have drastically impacted their earnings and livelihoods.
“The fares keep fluctuating without any consistency” said a protesting driver. “Customers face inconvenience and the drivers are left struggling with adequate earnings to support their families. We need a pricing model that works for everyone”.
The protests, organised by local driver unions, also targeted the operation of bike taxis by these aggregators, which the unions claim are illegal and pose safety risks to passengers. The protests have caused disruptions in daily commutes across the city as drivers rallied in solidarity to demand fair treatment and better working conditions.
Dina Bandhu Nayak, founder of Smart City Online Association, speaking at the protest, shared the drivers’ perspective:"We are protesting against the high commissions charged by Ola, Uber, and Rapido. They exploit us drivers by not keeping fair prices, and it’s hurting our earnings and families. We are also against their illegal bike taxis, which are unsafe for everyone. We support the new government app, Odisha Yatri, as it addresses many of our concerns, including fair pricing and improved safety features like integration with local police services. It offers a platform that benefits both drivers and riders."
Adding to their grievances, the drivers highlighted the high commission rates charged by these platforms. "Aggregators take high commissions and they deduct additional amounts under arbitrary pretexts," said a driver. "After covering these deductions and fuel costs, we are left with very little to support our families. These practices are simply not sustainable."
Amid the protests, many drivers pointed to Odisha Yatri, a government-backed platform, as an alternative they believe could address their concerns. Drivers mentioned its focus on transparency and safety as a positive step toward improving conditions for both themselves and passengers.
The protest highlights the growing dissatisfaction among drivers with private aggregators and their call for platforms that align with their financial and professional well-being. As the protests continue, commuters are experiencing delays, and the demand for alternative platforms is expected to increase in the coming days.
