NCRTC Celebrates World Environment Day, organises engaging activities for Commuters
- Turns Stations into Spaces of Awareness, Interaction and Sustainability
Meerut. On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, NCRTC organised a series of engaging and interactive activities across Namo Bharat stations and trains to spread awareness about environmental protection and sustainable living. Through fun-filled public engagement initiatives, commuters were encouraged to reflect on the importance of adopting environmentally responsible choices in their daily lives, while also recognising the role of public transport in building a cleaner future.
As part of the celebrations, special public announcements were made at Namo Bharat stations, thanking commuters for choosing Namo Bharat, a cleaner, greener and sustainable mode of regional transit. Sustainability themed quizzes organised at stations and inside Namo Bharat trains witnessed enthusiastic participation from commuters of all age groups. The participants were gifted special seed-embedded cards recognising commuter’s contribution towards a sustainable future. These unique cards can be planted in soil to grow into plants, symbolising the idea that even small actions can contribute towards a greener tomorrow.
Photo booths were also installed at various stations where commuters enthusiastically clicked photographs. The cheerful participation of commuters, especially youngsters and children, added vibrancy to the celebrations and transformed stations into lively spaces of awareness, interaction and positivity.
Apart from this, NCRTC, in collaboration with its Operations and Maintenance partner DB RRTS India and Aharda Education College in Meerut, has organised a three-day fun and informative activity series titled ‘Sustainable Textile, Sustainable Future’ at Begumpul Namo Bharat Station in Meerut. This initiative is aimed at raising awareness about the sustainable fashion choices amongst the commuters with creative showcases around environmental protection, recycling and sustainable lifestyles. The interactive activities, creative exhibits and awareness sessions organised as part of this activity are transforming the station into a lively space celebrating innovation and conscious living.
The event features presentations and creative displays by students at the station premises, a workshop on sustainable fashion and eco-friendly fabrics and various DIY activities. Commuters stopped to explore the exhibits, interact with the participants and understand the thought behind the displays. Many visitors were seen discussing the concepts, asking questions and clicking photographs, turning the station into a vibrant hub of learning and engagement rather than just a transit space. Commuters also participated enthusiastically in an interactive quiz on sustainable fashion and giveaways were given to the participants, leaving them with a memorable experience. Art-based activities and interactive sessions further added energy to the celebrations, making the initiative informative, visually engaging and enjoyable for commuters of all age groups. The event will continue on 6th and 7th June as well, with more interactive activities and sustainability-focused engagements planned for commuters and visitors at the station. Students from various schools and colleges will also be participating in these events.
Namo Bharat is a long-term strategic intervention for decongestion of the National Capital, reducing vehicular congestion and air pollution, and enabling the balanced and sustainable development of the region. With over one lakh commuters travelling daily on an average, it is steadily emerging as a preferred mode of regional travel. After only few months of commissioning of the entire Namo Bharat corridor, it has already started contributing towards reduction in road congestion and vehicular emissions across the region. Sustainability being a key focus area in the development and operations of the Namo Bharat project, NCRTC has taken numerous steps including installation of rooftop solar power plants at stations and depot buildings, rainwater harvesting infrastructure in the corridor, procuring energy from power plants and so on.
Through such initiatives, NCRTC continues to strengthen its commitment towards promoting sustainable mobility and creating greater environmental awareness among communities and commuters across the NCR.
