NCRTC Launches Women-Only Electric Bike Taxi Service at Meerut South Station on World Environment Day

Meerut-Taking a stride towards a green and sustainable future on the World Environment Day, NCRTC has launched an Electric Bike Taxi Service at the Meerut South Namo Bharat Station. In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the region, the service is “By Women, For Women”, operated exclusively by trained female riders and catering solely to female commuters. This pioneering initiative is developed in partnership with UTU Mobility and underscores NCRTC’s commitment to women safety and safe & sustainable last-mile connectivity.

The service has been strategically launched from the Parking Zone adjacent to Gate No. 1 of Meerut South Station. This station boasts the highest ridership of all the operational Namo Bharat stations. Initially around 10 electric bikes will be deployed during peak hours, offering last-mile connectivity to women commuters within a 5-km radius of Meerut South Station at a nominal fare.

The demographic which suffers most due to lack of adequate, reliable, inclusive and safe transport options is women. This, coupled with gendered norms, and access to essential services, especially if traveling with children and luggage, as well as for elderly and persons with disabilities, makes their peril manyfold. NCRTC wanted to address these issues and put in efforts to be a part of the change and this initiative is one of the steps in this direction. It will ensure a dedicated, safe and reliable last-mile option for women commuters of Namo Bharat.

After evaluating the commuter feedback and operational performance, NCRTC plans to expand this initiative across other Namo Bharat stations and key locations as well. It will ensure wider access to safe and eco-friendly last-mile options for women.

NCRTC has been making constant efforts to strengthen last-mile connectivity, to ensure seamless and convenient travel experience for Namo Bharat commuters. As a part of this effort, NCRTC in coordination with Delhi Transport corporation (DTC) has made arrangements to integrate air-conditioned electric city buses operating on various routes in Delhi with the Namo Bharat stations. At present, these buses are catering to four routes connected to the operational stations, New Ashok Nagar and Anand Vihar of the Delhi Section. Additionally, e-rickshaws and last mile service providers like Rapido are also operating at several stations in Ghaziabad.

The Women-only Electric Bike Taxi Service is another significant step in NCRTC’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability with commuter-centric service models, reinforcing its mission to deliver not just faster, but smarter and more inclusive transit solutions for India’s future.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, NCRTC also interacted with commuters and informed them about the impact of Namo Bharat trains on environmental sustainability and various green initiatives taken by NCRTC in the project. A pop-quiz was also played with commuters in which they participated with full fervor. NCRTC has been making strides in this direction with various initiatives including installing rooftop solar power plants at stations, Receiving Sub Stations (RSS) and depot buildings, building rainwater harvesting structures along the corridor, regenerative braking system and push buttons in the Namo Bharat trains. A Tree plantation drive was also organised at Depot at Duhai.
