NCRTC Conducts Awareness and Enforcement Drive Against Spitting at Sarai Kale Khan FOB

As part of its ongoing cleanliness efforts, NCRTC is conducting an awareness and enforcement drive against spitting at the Foot Over Bridge (FOB) connecting the Sarai Kale Khan Namo Bharat Station and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station.

During the campaign, commuters are being sensitised about the importance of maintaining cleanliness in public spaces. They are being informed that spitting chewing gum, gutkha, paan, tobacco etc at public places, including mass transit infrastructure is prohibited. As India continues to gain global recognition for its modern, technologically advanced public transport systems, maintaining their cleanliness and dignity is a shared civic responsibility. Such practices not only deface public infrastructure but also compromise hygiene, cause inconvenience to commuters, and adversely impact the image of the infrastructure as well as the country.

As part of the enforcement drive, penalties are also being imposed on passengers found violating the cleanliness norms in accordance with the applicable provisions. Till 30 July 2026, a total of 56 penalties were issued under the section 59 of Metro railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002 at the Sarai Kale Khan FOB.

Namo Bharat commuters have consistently demonstrated a high degree of civic awareness and responsibility towards maintaining cleanliness across the corridor. Many commuters voluntarily discourage littering and, on several occasions, have even taken the initiative to help keep station premises clean. However, instances of public spitting and littering continue to be reported. Despite the availability of dustbins and dedicated paper ticket collection boxes at stations, some commuters continue to litter station premises with paper QR tickets and other plastic waste. Gutkha stains also remain an occasional sight, underscoring the need for continued public awareness and collective participation in maintaining clean public spaces.

NCRTC conducts cleanliness drives regularly at station premises, along with awareness campaigns to promote civic responsibility across the corridor. Regular announcements are also made at stations and inside trains, urging commuters to maintain cleanliness. Additionally, initiatives such as 'Know Your Namo Bharat' are also being undertaken to foster a sense of ownership and shared responsibility among commuters. Carrying or consuming tobacco and alcohol is prohibited across the Namo Bharat system, and violations related to cleanliness, defacement of public property, and the prohibition on carrying or consuming such substances are punishable under the relevant provisions of the law.

NCRTC remains committed to fostering responsible commuter behaviour through sustained awareness initiatives and strict enforcement of cleanliness regulations. As cleanliness is a collective responsibility in all public spaces, commuters are urged to cooperate by adhering to the prescribed guidelines and contributing towards a cleaner, healthier, and more pleasant environment for everyone.
