NCRTC Receives the Esteemed UITP International Award for ‘Public and Urban Transport Strategy’ in Germany

Meerut. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has been conferred with the prestigious UITP (International Association of Public Transport) Award under the category ‘Public and Urban Transport Strategy’ for the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit 2025 held in Hamburg, Germany.

This international recognition reflects NCRTC’s efforts toward enhancing regional mobility through sustainable, commuter-centric transport solution in the National Capital Region (NCR). The award acknowledges the strategic approach adopted for this corridor to address the pressing urban mobility challenges through a high-speed, reliable, and inclusive transit system.

With Delhi projected to become the world’s most populous city by 2030, Namo Bharat, India’s first regional rail network, will play a critical role in decongesting the roads and curbing air pollution across the NCR. The corridor has been designed to reduce the region’s dependence on private vehicles by providing a fast, modern, and efficient alternative. It aims to empower citizens through improved access, addressing issues of economic and social exclusion and promoting balanced and sustainable economic development of NCR.

With trains having a design speed of 180 kmph and maximum operational speed of 160 kmph, Namo Bharat has incorporated several advanced technologies which are being implemented for the first time in the world in this project like ETCS Level 2 Hybrid Level 3 signalling over LTE backbone. Inclusivity remains central to the operations of the system, with over 40% of Operations & Management (O&M) roles held by women, and infrastructure built to be gender-sensitive and accessible to all commuters, including children, elderly and specially-abled.

Sustainability initiatives taken by NCRTC, such as sourcing 70% of traction energy from renewables, regenerative braking, installing rooftops solar power plants on all stations, depot, corporate buildings and sub-systems, and an effective rainwater harvesting network along the corridor, further demonstrate NCRTC’s commitment to sustainable, future-ready public transport systems.

A significant real estate growth has also been witnessed along the alignment of the corridor with the operations of the Namo Bharat trains. It can be credited to the first-of-its-kind Transit Oriented Development (TOD) initiatives, wherein as part of the broader TOD framework, TOD zones have been incorporated into the statutory city development Masterplans. At present, a 55 km stretch of the 82 km long corridor, from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South, with 11 stations is operational for people.

The UITP Awards are among the most respected global recognitions in public transport and highlight initiatives that are advancing sustainable, inclusive, and effective mobility worldwide. Recently, NCRTC also won the UIC Sustainability Impact Awards 2024, under the ‘Seamless Connectivity’ category as well as the ‘Overall Winner’ across all categories.
