NCRTC Organises Health Awareness Drive at Namo Bharat Stations on International Women’s Day

Meerut. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, NCRTC organised a two-day Women’s Health Awareness Drive on 7–8 March at Anand Vihar and Begumpul Namo Bharat stations. The initiative also included special outreach activities inside the women coach of Namo Bharat trains.

This awareness drive was organised in collaboration with the Operations and Maintenance Partner for Delhi-Meerut corridor, DB RRTS India, and _Everteen, an organisation working for menstrual hygiene and women’s wellbeing. It aimed to spread awareness about menstrual health and hygiene among women commuters. Interactive sessions were organised at stations and inside trains to encourage open conversations around menstrual health, helping address myths and promote informed choices.

As part of the initiative, essential hygiene kits were distributed to women commuters free of cost. These kits included sanitary pads, a period tracker, and a period diary designed to help women understand and monitor the different phases of their menstrual cycle, allowing them to better understand their bodies and monitor their wellbeing. Informational material was also shared to explain these phases in a simple and accessible manner.

Menstruation is a natural and essential biological process, and a sign of a healthy body. However, social taboos and hesitation often prevent open conversations around it. Initiatives such as this help create awareness, normalise discussions around menstrual health, and encourage women to speak openly about their concerns and seek appropriate guidance when needed.

The initiative received an overwhelming response from women commuters, many of whom actively participated in the sessions and appreciated the effort to bring conversations around menstrual health into public spaces. Dedicated women volunteers were present across the stations and trains, guiding commuters, distributing kits, and creating a supportive environment for discussions on menstrual hygiene and wellbeing.

As part of the celebrations, NCRTC also engaged with women commuters inside the Namo Bharat trains. A lively and interactive quiz was organised in the women coach to familiarise commuters with the various facilities available for women in the trains. Women commuters participated enthusiastically in the activity, sharing their experiences and appreciating the thoughtful design and amenities provided for their comfort. They were also gifted chocolates, adding a cheerful touch to the celebrations and making the interaction memorable for women commuters.

NCRTC has taken numerous initiatives to ensure that women feel safe during their journeys, even when travelling alone. Namo Bharat trains have a reserved coach for women and, in the other coaches as well, seats have been reserved for women, children, elderly commuters and specially-abled commuters. CCTV cameras installed in and around station premises monitor activities round the clock, and security personnel are deployed to oversee movements and enhance safety. To ensure that the end-to-end journeys of commuters remain safe and reliable, well-lit dedicated station pick-up and drop areas have also been created at the stations.

India’s first Namo Bharat Corridor, connecting Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut, has emerged as a harbinger of a paradigm shift in the transport landscape of the National Capital Region. It has transformed the way people travel across NCR, setting new benchmarks for safe, comfortable and reliable commuting. While it has positively impacted every section of society, for many women in the region it has increasingly become a vehicle for independence, self-reliance and transformation. Through such initiatives, NCRTC continues to foster a more inclusive and responsive public transport ecosystem where conversations around health, dignity and wellbeing are encouraged, ensuring that women commuters feel informed, supported and safe while travelling.
