Development of Namo Bharat Depot at Modipuram Progressing at Pace, Metro Station Also Taking Shape

- Second Depot of Namo Bharat Being Built in Modipuram Near University of Agriculture and Technology

Meerut. Development of Namo Bharat Depot at Modipuram Progressing at Pace, Metro Station Also Taking ShapeConstruction work for the second Namo Bharat depot is progressing rapidly in Modipuram, Meerut. This facility is being developed near the University of Agriculture and Technology campus to support operations on the entire Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor.  Alongside the depot, NCRTC is also constructing a dedicated Meerut Metro station, which will significantly enhance connectivity for nearby areas such as Pawli Khas, Daurala, Sakauti, and Powersa village.

Currently, Namo Bharat trains are being operated and maintained from an operational Depot located in Duhai, Ghaziabad. As operations expand across the full corridor, the requirement for an additional depot for operations and maintenance will become even more essential. To address this, another depot is being developed in Modipuram.

The metro station, adjacent to the depot is also taking shape, with roof work of the station progressing at a fast pace. A Depot Control Centre (DCC) is also planned to be built here. A DCC oversees operational control and train movements within the dedicated space in the depot premises.

A train workshop will also be developed at the Modipuram depot, where maintenance of both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro trains will be carried out. Stabling lines are being laid in the depot area to accommodate smooth stabling of trains. Additionally, a 1.2 km-long test track will also be laid within the premises for train testing. The depot will be equipped with indigenously manufactured systems and machinery, similar to those already in use at the Depot in Duhai.

Supporting infrastructure such as a Depot Scrap Yard and key technical units like the Inspection Work Shop (IWS) and the permanent-way office (for track maintenance) are also being constructed here in this depot. The depot will feature 4 inspection bay lines (IBL) and 4 workshop lines to facilitate train checks and maintenance. It will also include stabling lines with capacity for 34 trainsets of both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro.

IBL lines are used for train testing, while stabling lines serve as parking bays for trainsets. Trains undergo both static and dynamic testing on IBL lines before they are  inducted into mainline service. Workshop lines support repair and maintenance activities of trains. A separate heavy internal cleaning line ensures thorough cleaning inside the trains.

An automatic coach washing plant will also be set up for external washing and cleaning of trainsets. A similar facility is already operational at the Depot in Duhai. In addition, a heavy-cleaning shed is being developed to enable deep-cleaning and scheduled maintenance of the trains.

Alongside the depot, the Meerut Metro station in Modipuram is also taking shape. This is an at-grade station with two planned entry/exit points. A Foot Over Bridge (FOB) is also being constructed on the university side to facilitate safe and convenient movement of commuters.

A total of 13 stations are being constructed for Meerut Metro. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, local Metro services will be provided on the same infrastructure as the Namo Bharat Trains. The stations include Meerut South, Partapur, Rithani, Shatabdi Nagar, Brahmapuri, Meerut Central, Bhainsali, Begumpul, MES Colony, Daurli, Meerut North, Modipuram, and Modipuram Depot. Among these, stations such as Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram will offer both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro services, while the rest will be dedicated to metro operations.
