“Build Quality from Day One to Create a Truly World-Class Institution” – Governor V.K. Singh
MEERUT, MARCH 1, 2026.Emphasising that excellence must begin at the planning stage itself, the Hon’ble Governor of Mizoram, Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), advised the university fraternity of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University to focus uncompromisingly on quality while building the institution, as “gaps left in the foundation become difficult to fill later.”
The Governor visited the under-construction campus of the university at Salawa, where the construction work is expected to be completed in the coming months. During his detailed inspection of the facilities and interaction with university officials, he stressed the importance of long-term vision, global standards, and inclusive access in shaping a world-class sports institution.
Expressing his broader vision for transforming India’s sports ecosystem, the Governor said,“If we aspire to build a world-class sports university, quality must be embedded from the very beginning. It is extremely difficult to correct shortcomings at a later stage. This institution should not remain confined to a particular region. Talented sportspersons from Mizoram and other states may also come here to benefit from high-performance coaching, modern infrastructure, and quality sports education.”
He underscored that such institutions must serve as national hubs of excellence, contributing to India’s emergence as a global sporting powerhouse.
Vice Chancellor Maj Gen Deep Ahlawat (Retd) presented a comprehensive overview of the university’s infrastructure plans, academic roadmap, and achievements over the past year. He informed the Governor that the university plans to introduce 64 academic courses, covering diverse aspects of sports sciences, coaching, management, and allied disciplines.
Highlighting the university’s rural setting as a strength rather than a limitation, the Vice Chancellor stated:
“Our vision is to provide structured and scientific opportunities to rural sporting talent and nurture them systematically. The entire region is rich in sports potential. This university will act as a catalyst to prepare young athletes not only for competitive excellence but also for sustainable careers in sports, contributing to the larger vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.”
The Governor appreciated the rapid progress made by the university within a short span and offered valuable suggestions drawn from his vast experience in public life and the Indian Army. He spent over two hours on the campus, closely observing the facilities and engaging with officials.
The visit concluded with a warm welcome extended by the university fraternity, marking an important milestone in the institution’s journey towards becoming a centre of excellence in sports education and performance.
